Whatever Happened To ...
... the debate over illegal immigrants? I've been watching cable news the past couple days, and it's all Jonbenet all the time (with a bit of Iraq and Lebanon thrown in, but really just a bit).
No, seriously.
No, seriously.

God, last week on vacation I tried to get my news fix from cable news and it was literally impossible.
But just because cable news has gone all pedophilic doesn't mean Republicans aren't still running on racism. Have you seen the ad the NRSC is running on behalf of Lincoln Chafee in his primary, for example? I would link to it, but YouTube is being a complete bitch right now. I'll put in a link if it gets itself sorted out.

Here's a decent Jeff Kincaid article in Slate analyzing the Jonbenet story essentially as porn.

Wait isn't that the article I linked to in my post?

Oops. Yes.

Right, but in my wide-eyed, roseate optimism, I would hope that an important policy issue that is also politically urgent is exactly the kind of thing the media should still be covering, to give some context to the campaign sloganeering.
Oh if only I were more cynically depoliticized, it would all feel better. I should watch me some Daily Show.
(p.s. I just realized what the opposite of the Daily Show is -- Kiki and Herb)

Yes. It would be wide-eyed roseate optimism. They don't do it, especially not in a way that gives context to campaign sloganeering. You're right that that's what they should do, but they don't, and as long as they don't they deserve to be mocked.
