The Coup

The albums are funky, but the live backing band was rock. GREAT show. What was with all the frat boys, though?

What was with all the frat boys at a hiphop show?

It's not like it was back in our day. Hiphop is fully and completely the new pop, except the aggressive side of pop. It is for meatheads and their loved ones.

It no longer even pretends to be otherwise. The Coup enjoys being the new Def Leppard.

    Even though they're "revolutionary"?

Oh, were you being ironic when you asked why all the frat boys were there? If so, sorry for being pedantic.

But I am pleased to have realized that the Coup are the new Def Leppard.

    No, I was sincerely surprised.

I don't think the Coup are the new Def Leppard. The music is way better in its genre and it's hard to imagine Def Leppard anywhere but an arena, while the Coup are definitely a club act. They're more like the new Mighty Mighty Bosstones.

Heh, yeah, good call. But are you trying to say Def Leppard wasn't revolutionary? What about "Armageddon It"???

I was making a more general point, but the Coup is a bad example.

Actually, they're a bit like Chumbawamba, which started as a revolutionary anarchist punk band but now is the favorite band of meatheads everywhere because of that one song about beer.

Yeah. One particularly annoying frat guy at the show kept yelling for them to play "Laugh, Fuck, and Drink Liquor!" The full chorus of which goes:

I'm here to laugh, love, fuck and drink liquor
And maybe help the revolution come quicker

    Hm. Emphasis on "maybe."

Don't emphasize it too hard, because I got it a little wrong. Here's the real lyric:

I'm here to laugh, love, fuck and drink liquor
and help the damn revolution come quicker
Laugh, love, fuck and drink liquor; and help make a revolution
I'm here to laugh, love, fuck and drink liquor
and help the damn revolution come quicker
Laugh, love, fuck and drink liquor; and maybe make a revolution
