President Bush bowed today to calls from within his own party for a shakeup in the senior ranks of the White House, saying that he had reluctantly accepted the resignation of his longtime chief of staff, Andrew H. Card Jr.

Why does the Times just uncritically repeat blatantly false white house spin?
Card was the second-longest- serving chief of staff ever and was long overdue for a replacement. It's something that should have happened at least a year ago. Nothing about it is anything like a shakeup.
