That didn't take long

Remember this?

ALBANY, Dec. 12 - After weeks of public squabbling, leaders of the New York Republican Party met in a smoke-free back room here today and reversed course, urging Jeanine F. Pirro to run for state attorney general next year instead of the United States Senate, the office they recruited her for six months ago.

Mrs. Pirro, the district attorney of Westchester County, immediately replied that she would continue her challenge against Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and chose to interpret the party's plea as a sign of "confidence" in her abilities.

Well, today she dropped out.

ALBANY — Jeanine Pirro pulled the plug Wednesday on her struggling campaign for the Republican nomination to challenge Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s 2006 re-election bid and said she will run instead for state attorney general.

Do they even have anyone lined up to replace her? Maybe Rick Lazio wants to give it another shot.

The pundits were saying that the Republican kingmakers basically were looking for a kamikaze candidate who they'd later reward with a big boost in another election. So look for an unknown with nothing to lose who wants to raise his or her profile. I think, at least, that that's the conventional wisdom.

Another election? Like what? What is there left to run for on the state level? Chuck Schumer's seat? Governor, when Spitzer is running for reelection? AG four years from now?

Besides, "a big boost" from the New York Republican Party is worth less than nothing.

Heh, I dunno. Comptroller? AG? I'm just repeating what I saw on Meet the Press.

As an aside, Pirro is the first Arab-American candidate for a significant position since Ralph Nader (she's of Lebanese descent). She never plays that up, though. It's too bad, since she really flouts ignorant stereotypes (including the conflation of Arabs and Muslims -- she's Christian).

    Mayor of New York?

This is idle speculation -- I think it would all depend on who was approached to be the kamikaze. The main point is that no one thinks they can defeat Hilary in the Senate race. What they want is to damage her for her presidential bid.

Again, that's my impression of the conventional wisdom.
