Fox News on the Transit Strike

I've been watching Fox 5 News' coverage of the transit strike (or as Rosanna Scotto always shrilly calls it, "this illegal transit strike"). Every time someone says something even slightly pro-union (like one viewer emailing that it cut her commute time in half because the streets were so empty), Rosanna Scotto goes "oh, come on." It's a bit hilarious how biased/near hysterical she is, actually.

My favorite bit was when they found a 20 year old Puerto Rican woman named Stephanie who was stuck in gridlock trying to enter the city as she went into labor. Stephanie was all like "who are you and why the fuck are there Fox cameras in my face?" There was hilarious footage of the Fox News Producer sprinting along the highway to the transit cops to get Stephanie through the road check. Fox News Producer Rescues Bambino! News at 10!

And my favorite quote of the day is when Bloomberg ranted that "the TWU has done more to hurt the city than anybody else." Anybody else? So the TWU is worse than Al Qaeda? Take a deep breath, Mike.

Fox does mention that MTA officials decided to sit down today of all days to discuss their billion dollar surplus. How infuriating must that have been to the rank and file? I'm really starting to believe the conspiracy theory that the MTA was trying to instigate a strike to bankrupt the union.

However, I do wonder if it's worth ruining the holidays for the rest of the city. Couldn't the TWU have chosen different timing? In 1980, their strike went on for 11 days. That would really fuck up Christmas and, even more, New Year's Eve, for the whole city. Plus it would turn everyone against the unions for like a generation.

Well, as you can tell above, I totally buy the conspiracy theory. In fact, I believe I was pretty early on that particular bus.

Indeed, you called it a few days ago.

UPDATE: Geraldo reported today that Stephanie had a son, "and she named him Elijah, you know, like the guy who wasn't there."

(I swear that's a direct quote from Geraldo)
